Questions & Answers

What is a lead sheet?

A lead sheet is printed music that contains the essential elements of a song: words, melody line, and chords.  It gives musicians the basic information they need to play a piece of music.  To see a sample, click here.

Why should I create a lead sheet of my recording?

Most musicians can play from a lead sheet.  If you want others to be able to perform a given piece of music, a lead sheet will enable them to do this.  For example, if you are an independent artist preparing to go into the studio with hired musicians unfamiliar with your material, you would need well-prepared lead sheets to give them so they can work quickly while the studio's "meter" is running.

If you are a songwriter, lead sheets are an important part of your press kit, which is used for submitting your music to publishers and record companies.  Having lead sheets of your songs is also helpful if you are registering for copyright.

How do I place an order?

Our order process is designed to get you the music you need in just a few easy steps.

  1. Upload your music, lyrics, and contact information on our Orders page.
  2. You will receive an email acknowledging that we have received your files and providing you with your order number.
  3. After we have verified your song length and lyrics, you will receive an email invoice with instructions on how to pay.
  4. Once you have paid, we will begin work on your project.  You should receive a link to download your sheet music within seven business days.

How much does it cost?

We are committed to providing quick, professional service at a reasonable cost.  Because our price is based on the length of your song, you get all the pricing information you need before you submit your music.

A professionally printed lead sheet of any vocal/instrumental song up to 4 minutes is just $49.  Each minute after that is $10 more.  (A song between 4 and 5 minutes would be $59, one between 5 and 6 minutes would be $69, etc.)  If the song has lyrics and they are not uploaded with the song, there is an additional $10 charge.

For an additional $29 per song, a piano line (detailing bass movement and chords) may be added to the score.  If you are interested in this option, just make a note of it in the "additional instructions" box on the order page.  Please note that the estimated cost shown on the order page is for a lead line only; we will add the additional cost when we send your invoice.

A 15% discount will be given for orders of 3 or more songs.

Other instrumental arrangements are available upon request; please inquire for pricing.

What are my payment options?

For fastest service, we recommend paying online using PayPal.  When you receive your invoice from us, you will see a link to PayPal where you can go to complete your transaction in just a few easy steps.  An account with PayPal is free and may be linked to any major credit card or bank account.

Alternatively, you may send us a check through the mail, which must clear the bank before we can begin work on your project.  We will notify you through email when your check has cleared.

How soon will I receive my music?

Our goal is to get your music to you as quickly as possible.  In most cases, it takes only a few days.  If we are not able to deliver your music within seven business days, you have the option of canceling your order and receiving a full refund.

I am uploading original music that has not yet been registered for copyright.  How can I be sure it is safe to send it to your site?

The security of your music is very important to us.  We use state-of-the-art 128K encryption to ensure that both your audio uploads and the sheet music we send you are secure.

What if I have a song in non-digital format (like a tape) or prefer not to upload my music to the site?

You have the option of submitting a hard copy through the mail as long as we have your current email address.  After we receive your materials, we will email you to get the process started.  Click here to enter your contact information and see our mailing address.

What if I'm not happy with the music I receive?

We take great care to make sure that your sheet music is 100% accurate.  On the slight chance that your order contains an error, please bring it to our attention.  If it is our mistake, we will be happy to fix it free of charge.

What if the recording is copyrighted by someone else?

If you own the rights to the music you want to order, there are no copyright issues.

Lead Sheet Station provides the service of musical transcription; we do not sell any product.  It is each customer's responsibility to abide by copyright laws and only place an order for music they have the right to copy.

For religious music requested by a church, the church's CCLI license allows it to arrange, print, and copy any song in the CCLI database for congregational singing if no published version is available.  This includes songs that are published but are not in a usable format (too many pages, wrong key, etc.).  If the song is not listed with CCLI, the church must obtain a print license from the copyright holder before placing an order.

For non-religious music, or for individuals not covered under a CCLI license, permission is needed from the copyright owner before a transcription can be made.  You should contact the song's publisher for information on how to request a print license.
